- Kakegawa Castle
nihongo|Kakegawa Castle|掛川城|kakegawajō is a hilltop ("hirayamashiro") castle located in Kakegawa,
Shizuoka Prefecture ,Japan .History
Kakegawa Castle was built by
Asahina Yasuhiro in 1513 to protect the Enshu area. However,Tokugawa Ieyasu took the castle, at the time commanded by Yasuhiro's descendant,Asahina Yasutomo , in 1569. Ieyasu placed his son,Tokugawa Yasumichi , andImagawa Yoshitada in command of the castle.Toyotomi Hideyoshi gained control of it in 1590 and relegated control of it toYamanouchi Kazutoyo . What stands on the site today dates from Kazutoyo's renovations, which he carried out while he ruled the castle. The Tokugawa clan occupied the castle again after theBattle of Sekigahara and the Shogunate continued to use it until 1854, when much of it was destroyed by an earthquake. This was followed by theMeiji Restoration , when the keep ("tenshukaku") was torn down in 1869, prevented it from having any further military use.
