Portal stone

Portal stone

In Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series, a portal stone is a way of travel, but is is forgotten and obsolete, as the only ones who could travel it are the Aes Sedai of the Age of Legends. Portal stones predate the Age of Legends. They are bound to one location and resist being moved.

Symbols on the stone allow a wielder of the One Power to travel to any other stone, in any possible world.

Description

Stones are made of a gray stone and are "three spans high and a full pace thick." [cite book | last = Jordan | first = Robert | title = The Great Hunt | publisher = T. Doherty Associates | location = New York | year = 1991 | isbn = 0812517725 | pages = pp215 ] They are covered top to bottom with deeply incised inscriptions. The stone is usually worn to an extreme degree. Portal stones are usually sparsely distributed, although Tear contains four.

Use

Symbols at the top indicate worlds, symbols on the bottom indicate locations. A combination of the two would enable any one who understood them to travel to any stone in any world. The symbols can be used separately as well. [cite book | last = Jordan | first = Robert | title = The Shadow Rising | publisher = Tor | location = New York | year = 1993 | isbn = 0812513738 | pages = pp362 ]

Transition is usually instantaneous, although it is possible to arrive at a destination at a time before leaving. The amount of the One Power needed is a large one.
