The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (AvH) grants Humboldt Research Awards annually to foreign
scholar s with internationally recognized academic qualifications. The award is intended as a lifelong tribute to the past academic accomplishments of award winners. This Award is given to“eminent non-German researchers whose fundamental discoveries, insights or new theories have had a lasting impact on their field of specialization and who are expected to produce cutting edge results”. The Humboldt Research Prize honours the academic achievements to date of internationally recognized scientists and is valued at €60000 (about Rs.37 lakhs) [http://172.16.1.100/admin/uploads/spotlights/VC_Award.pdf] .Outstanding scientists and scholars from all disciplines from abroad whose fundamental discoveries, new theories, or insights have had a significant impact on their own discipline and who are expected to continue producing cutting-edge achievements in future are eligible to be nominated for a Humboldt Research Award.
Award winners are invited to spend a period of up to one year cooperating on a long-term research project with specialist colleagues at a research institution in Germany. The Humboldt Foundation grants up to 100 Humboldt Research Awards annually.
For the 2008 year Professor Seyed E. Hasnain, Vice-Chancellor, University of Hyderabad has been selected for Humboldt Research Award. Professor Hasnain was the first Director of the Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), Hyderabad and is presently the Vice- Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad. He currently leads an active research group on the molecular epidemiology and functional biology of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the pathogen that causes tuberculosis and has authored more than 180 research papers and about a dozen international patents. Professor Hasnain is a member of the Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India and is the Chairman of the Biotechnology Advisory Council to the Chief Minister of
Andhra Pradesh . Another recipient was ProfessorMichael Fellows of theUniversity of Newcastle, Australia for his development and leadership of the field ofParameterized Complexity .References
