- Babel Island
Babel Island is a
granite island, with an area of 440 ha, in south-easternAustralia . It is part ofTasmania ’s Babel Island Group, lying in easternBass Strait off the east coast ofFlinders Island in theFurneaux Group . It is home to the largest colony ofShort-tailed Shearwater s in the world, with an estimated 2.8 million pairs, or about 12% of the population, as well as a major colony ofLittle Penguin s, with 20,000 pairs. It is privately owned and the shearwaters are subject to annualmuttonbirding .Fauna
Apart from the shearwaters and penguins, other
seabird s andwader s recorded as breeding on the island includeSilver Gull ,Pacific Gull ,Sooty Oystercatcher andCrested Tern .White-bellied Sea-Eagle s breed on the island andPeregrine Falcon s nest on the eastern cliffs.Mammal s found there are theRed-necked Wallaby andTasmanian Pademelon as well as the introducedHouse Mouse andferal cat .
