In Romania, Oprea played water polo, beginning as a young child and nearly participated in the 1988 Olympics, however, as the story goes, Romania did not have enough money to send the water polo team, so they sent swimmers instead. Mihai Oprea also has been married to Janis Oprea, a Texan math teacher at St. Marks. In addition to continuing his Water Polo career, Oprea coaches the JV and Varsity Swimming and Water Polo teams as well as a Texas Water Polo team.
Mihai and Janis enjoy their lives coaching and at St. Mark's School of Texas are head and assistant coaches of the swimming and water polo teams. Janis also currently coaches the math team, replacing the legendary George Acuff. All in all the Opreas are teaching legends at St. Mark's for St. Mark's has not lost an SPC championship since it started in water polo in 1964.
