Baseball Hall of Fame balloting, 1953

Baseball Hall of Fame balloting, 1953

The 1953 elections to select inductees to the Baseball Hall of Fame proceeded under a revised format. The Baseball Writers Association of America (BBWAA) held an election to select from among recent players, while the newly established Veterans Committee held an election to select earlier players, managers and umpires; it was the first time that field personnel who had never played in the major leagues were formally ruled eligible under special categories, although earlier committees in the 1930s and 1940s had chosen several executives and pioneers.

BBWAA election

A total of 264 ballots were cast in the Baseball Writers Election, with 2,493 individual votes for 82 specific candidates; 198 votes were required for election. The two candidates who received at least 75% of the vote and were elected are indicated in "bold italics"; those candidates who were selected in subsequent elections are indicated in "italics".
