Joseph Hardin

Colonel Joseph Hardin was an American farmer and legislator. He was born in Richmond, Virginia, moved to North Carolina, and came to Greene County and later Knox County, Tennessee following the American Revolutionary War, in which he served in the United States Army, rising to the rank of Colonel. He served as a representative of Washington and Greene Counties in the State of Franklin and in the Tennessee Territorial Assembly. In 1786, three thousand acres of land was surveyed for Hardin in what would later become West Tennessee. He died sometime between 1791 and 1801 in Knox County, but the land allocated to him as a Revolutionary War veteran was settled by two of his sons near what would become Cerro Gordo, Tennessee.
