] The Pakistani newspaper "Dawn" reported the shootout took place in the Hayatabad neighborhood of Peshawar, on the border of Pakistan's Tribal areas. The article stated he was shot during an arrest raid that was part of Operation Evening Star, and that a confederate escaped.

The house was raided based on a tip from the Inter-Services Intelligence agency that a "group of Afghan terrorists".

Dawn described Abdur Rehman as "the son of Muhammad", a "stocky figure in his mid-thirties", who had married a thirteen-year-old Pakistani girl three months earlier.His wife was injured during the shootout.

According to "Dawn" a senior official identified the man who escaped as an Egyptian national named "Sulieman", wanted by the FBI, who offered a $100,000.According to "Dawn" he had just one arm."Dawn" reported three identity documents found in the house identified him as "Qari Mohammad Ayub", "Mohammad Ayub", and "Mujahid Mohammad Ayub".

Abdur Rehman's wife Khadija said the man was a frequent visitor to their house.She said she knew him only as "Ayub". She acknowledged knowing that her husband and her friends were wanted by the Americans. She said she and her husband had moved to the house when another friend of his had been arrested and sent to Guantanamo a month and a half earlier.

"Dawn" reported that the security officials who surrounded the house negotiated with Ayub for over three hours, and that Ayub had escaped into the Tribal areas when Adbur Rehman was shot after emerging from the house, hurling several hand grenades.Dawn reported the house was just five metres from the border to the Tribal areas.
