- T. J. Maher
Thomas Joseph (T. J.) Maher (29 April 1922 – 19 April 2002) was a former Irish politician and Farmers' leader.
He was born on a small farm near
Cashel ,County Tipperary in 1922. He was educated locally and became a member ofMacra na Feirme . [cite web|url=http://archives.tcm.ie/thekingdom/2002/05/02/story4459.asp|title=T.J. Maher fought the good fight for farmers|accessdate=2008-04-29|publisher=The Kingdom] He was a founder member of "National Farmers' Association" (later theIrish Farmers' Association ) in 1955. He became the President of the IFA in 1967. In 1977 he became president of the Irish Co-Operative Organisation Society (ICOS). He stood unsuccessfully as an Independent candidate in the 1981 general election in theTipperary South constituency. He retired from politics at the 1994 European elections. He was awarded anhonorary doctorate by theUniversity of Limerick in 1997.References
