Utpal Dutt

Utpal Dutt (Bangla: উত্পল দত্ত) (March 29, 1929 – August 19, 1993) was an Indian actor, director and writer. He was primarily an actor in Bengali Theatre, but he also acted in many Bengali and Hindi films. He received National Film Award for Best Actor in 1970 and three Filmfare Best Comedian Awards.

Biography

Born in Barisal, Bengal (now in Bangladesh), Dutt studied English literature at the St. Xavier's College, Calcutta. He was active primarily in Bengali theatre, but did tour several times with the Shakespearean International Theatre Company. He was an founding member of Indian People's Theatre Association. He wrote and directed what he called "Epic Theatre" (a term he borrowed from Bertolt Brecht) to bring about discussion and change in Bangladesh. He was one of the most influential personalities in the Group Theater movement. He acted in many Bengali films, including many films by Satyajit Ray.

Dutt was also an extremely famous comic actor in Hindi cinemas, though he acted only in a handful of Hindi cinemas. He acted in the comedy movies, most notable ones being "Guddi", "Golmaal", "Naram Garam", "Rang Birangi" and "Shaukeen". He received Filmfare Best Comedian Award for "Golmaal", "Naram Garam" and "Rang Birangi".

He balanced successful parallel careers as an extremely serious theatre playwright and director in Bengal alongside doing hilariously comic roles in Hindi cinema.

Dutt was also a lifelong Marxist and an active supporter of the Communist Party), CPIM or Communist Party of India MarxistFact|date=February 2007. He staged many street dramas in favour of the Communist Party. He was also jailed for his views.Fact|date=February 2007 His famous plays include "Tiner Toloar" ("The Tin Sword", partially based on "Pygmalion", "Manusher Odhikare" ("Human Rights", based on the Scottsboro Boys case) and "Kallol" (based on the 1942 Naval Mutiny) one more famous play was LAAL DURGO or Red Fort. Dutt died in Calcutta, West Bengal.

Family

Dutt was married to theatre/film actress Shobha Sen. They had a daughter called Bishnupriya who became a professor at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi.
