Beaugay Handicap

Beaugay Handicap

The Beaugay Handicap is a American Thoroughbred horse race run at Aqueduct Racetrack on Long Island in New York in the spring of the year. The Grade III turf event is for fillies and mares three-year-olds and older, and is set at a distance of one and one-sixteenth of a mile.

In its 32rd running in 2009, the Beaugay offers a purse of $100,000 added.

The Beaugay is named for Beaugay, the champion two-year-old of 1945 regardless of gender. Owned by Elizabeth Arden, she won her first six starts: the Fashion Stakes, the Polly Drummond Stakes, the Arlington Lassie Stakes, the Princess Pat Stakes, and the Matron Stakes. Her only loss came in the Futurity when she fell after hitting the rail. (She was unhurt and went on racing.)

In 1979 the race was run in two divisions. Prior to 1983 it took place on the main track at Aqueduct. Due to bad weather it was set at one mile in 1998.

Jerry Bailey has won this race five times: 2002, 2001, 2000, 1996, and 1994. Criminologist) (5) (1:41.44) (John Velazquez)
