Sean Murray (artist and promoter)

Sean Murray (artist and promoter)

Sean Murray (December 22, 1980), is a promoter, hipster, and gay rights activist. He currently resides in and is a life-long resident of New London, Connecticut.

Little is known about Sean's early life and childhood. He is from a racially diverse background, being 1/4 African-American and 3/4 Irish American. He courageously proclaimed himself as gay from a very young age, and since then has championed LGBT rights all across the Connecticut and New York region.

Accomplishments

Murray's most noted contributions have been to the New London arts community. He is active in all circles, but particularly music, and has booked over 500 bands to play at a variety of venues around the city, including several hundred now-famous national acts. Murray has a knack for discovering bands before they 'get big,' often with success following the band just after they grace the stages of a New London venue. Bands like Ra Ra Riot and Dr. Dog have played in New London due to Murray's efforts. He is widely regarded as the "person to know" to get things done in the arts community. Every year, he tirelessly organizes, books and promotes 2 large music festivals, IAM Festival and SailFest, both of which draw thousands of people from the surrounding areas.

Murray also spearheads a youth-volunteer service called the "New London Urban Opportunities Program," which serves urban underprivileged youth and young adults by providing an outdoor location and equipment for activities such as soccer, kickball, and Frisbee. Over the last two years, his donations of money and time have allowed as many as several hundred youths from mostly impoverished areas to enjoy these recreational activities.

Murray also hosts a weekly radio show on 90.9 WCNI. Called "Music is My Radar," he showcases local talent alongside reputed indie and underground acts, and frequently has nationally known musicians as guests on his show.

Other achievements

In 2006, the Hartford Courant proclaimed Murray one of the "50 People to Watch in 2007" in Connecticut.
