Albert Alfred "Al" Dreares (b. January 4, 1929,
Key West, Florida ) is an Americanjazz drummer.Dreares was a childhood friend of
Fats Navarro , and studied atHartnett Conservatory inNew York City on the advice of his father, a trumpeter. He played early in his career in the bands ofPaul Williams (1953-54) andTeddy Charles (1955). The next year he played withCharles Mingus and in an ensemble withRandy Weston andAhmed Abdul-Malik . In 1957 he played onFreddie Redd 's album "San Francisco Suite" and worked withKenny Burrell ; 1958 saw him withGigi Gryce andJerome Richardson , and 1959 withPhineas Newborn , as well as with his own ensemble.Other credits include recordings with
Mal Waldron andJulian Euell ,Bennie Green ,Don Pullen ,Thelonious Monk , andDizzy Gillespie .References
