Smarte grew up in Elk Grove, California, played college soccer at UC Santa Cruz, and played for the San Jose Frogs when they were members of the National Premier Soccer League, before being drafted first overall in the 2008 MLS Supplemental Draft by the San Jose Earthquakes.
