Pandit Ram Narayan is a longime and influential
Sarangi player. He has played and popularised Sarangi as a serious classical solo instrument on prestigious concert platforms all over the world. Born in Udaipur, Rajasthan, Pandit Ram Narayan does not descend from a family of musicians. His formal training in sarangi playing started at age five under his father who was not a sarangi player. Ram Narayan honed his music making skills under the guidance of many vocalists such as Pandit Udayalal, Pandit Madhav Prasad and Ustad Abdul Wahid Khan.By the time he was 14, Narayan had already mastered an instrument which dates back to the earliest known music forms in Indian music history.
While he was a teenager, he was assigned a job as a staff artist at the All India Radio. He began his career as an accompanist to various vocalists, and soon earned the sobriquet of a sarangi shahenshah.

November 14 ,1999 he was awarded the Aditya Vikram Birla Kala Kiran Puraskar to honor his "research and the dedication with which he has practised his art for the last 50 years." [cite news
