The CL class are an Australian diesel electric locomotives ordered by the Commonwealth Railways in 1970. Altogether, 17 units were built by Clyde Engineering, Granville. They were passed to the Australian National after its establishment, and in 1993 the whole fleet were rebuilt into either the CLF and CLP classes by Morrison Knudsen Australia.

The CLF were intended for freight, but the CLP class were fitted with a head end power generator for use with passenger trains such as the "Indian Pacific", "The Ghan", and "The Overland". The class are now owned by the Australian Railroad Group (ARG) (now QR National) or Genesee and Wyoming Australia (GWA) and are used on interstate freight trains.

CLP 15 (formerly CL 1) was scrapped after the Mt Christie accident.
