12 January 1930 ) is an Irishnovel ist, winner of the "Whitbread Book Award" for "The Old Jest" in 1979, and was shortlisted for the "Booker Prize " in [1977] . "The Old Jest", a novel about the Irish War of Independence was later made into a film called "The Dawning ", starringAnthony Hopkins , produced bySarah Lawson and directed by Robert Knights.Personal life
She was born in Dublin,
Ireland , to the Irish actor/director Shelah Richards and the playwrightDenis Johnston , a cousin of the late actressGeraldine Fitzgerald , via Fitzgerald's mother, Edith. She was educated atTrinity College Dublin , and currently lives inDerry ,Northern Ireland . She is also member of the Church of Ireland and many of her novels deal with the fading of the ProtestantAnglo-Irish ascendancy in the 20th century.Bibliography
