It was founded in 1956 by Professor B.B. Shefton with a grant from the University of £20. Since then the collection has grown to over 800 objects. Professor B.B. Shefton was the curator until 1984 and since Professor Tony Spawforth has taken this responsibility.
As part of the Great North Museum Project the museum, along with
Museum of Antiquities is to be moved to theHancock Museum .
