September 4 ,1970 Salvador Allende gained presidency ofChile after four elections and became the first socialist to be democratically elected in the Western Hemisphere in the 20th century. Soon after, PresidentRichard Nixon ordered a covert operation,Project FUBELT , to undermine Allende's government and promote a military coup in Chile. The operations includedHenry Kissinger (National Security Advisor),Richard Helms (CIA Director), and Attorney GeneralJohn N. Mitchell .
