Joseph Wanton

Joseph Wanton

Joseph Wanton (1705-1780) was a merchant from Newport, Rhode Island and Governor of Rhode Island from 1769 to 1775 and a Loyalist.

Wanton was born in Newport the son of William Wanton, governor of Rhode Island from 1732 to 1733. He was raised in the Church of England as a compromise because his mother was a Presbyterian and father a Quaker. Wanton was involved with privateers during the French and Indian War. Wanton is pictured in the 1755 painting by John Greenwood, "Sea Captains Carousing in Surinam." Wanton served as Governor of Rhode Island from 1769 to 1775 when he was removed for his failure to swear a loyalty oath to the patriot cause. As governor, he oversaw the prosecution of the 1772 Gaspee Affair. Wanton was buried in the Golden Hill Cemetery in 1780. Wanton's son, Joseph Wanton, Jr. served as deputy governor of Rhode Island in 1764 and 1767 and owned Hunter House.
