Earl Johnson (born
August 24 ,1886 Gwinnett County, Georgia - diedMay 31 ,1965 ) was an old time fiddler who was very much influenced by the music ofGid Tanner and his Skillet Lickers.Biography
Robert Earl Johnson learned to play the fiddle from an early age. When he was young, he used to practise together with his siblings, Albert and Ester. In 1923, he joined
Fiddlin' John Carson 's "Virginia Reelers" and within two years, he made his first recordings onParamount Records . As the leader of "the Dixie Entertainers", he recorded with guitarist Byrd Moore and banjoist Emmett Bankston. When Byrd Moore left, Johnson added guitarist Lee "Red" Henderson and formed "the Clodhoppers". The new band became successful recording forOkeh Records in 1927. He continued to make recordings with the two bands simultaneously. Johnson made his last recordings in 1931.Original Discography
