William 'Will' Smith is the main character from the 1990s television sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". He is portrayed by Will Smith.

Character Background

William Smith was born on July 3, 1973 and raised in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Louis and Viola Smith. Will lived in the projects and was raised in poverty. When Will was five his father abandoned Will and his mother. When Will was seventeen he got into a fight at the basketball court with a bully named Omar. Because of this and other dangers of growing up in the ghetto, Will's mother Vy sent Will to live with his aunt Vivian and Uncle Philip Banks in Bel Air, California.

Personality

He often has spats with his cousin Carlton, whom he sees as less "black." Despite their differences, Will grows extremely close to the Banks family, even turning down his mother when she offers to let him move back in with her again in Philly. Although he gives the impression of not being a smart person, he has shown his smarts in many ways, like getting a 116 on his PSAT, beating Carlton by 2 points.

During one of Will's trips back to his old neighborhood, he confronts the old park bully, Omar, to restore his damaged reputation. When Will challenges him, he is startled when a reformed Omar refuses to fight. Omar misses Will, and through him Will gradually realizes that his reputation is not important, and returns to Bel-Air. At the conclusion of the story's run, he remains in Los Angeles to finish up his last year of college.
