MacKenzie, a native of Scotland, began playing as a youth in that country. He played for both the U-16 and U-18 Scottish national teams in the Scottish Youth League. He also spent time with the
St. Johnstone andDundee United youth teams. At some point, he moved to the United States where he attendedClover Hill High School inVirginia his junior and senior years. As a senior prep soccer player, MacKenzie was selected as All State. He then attendedOld Dominion University where he played on the men’s soccer team from 2003 to 2006. He finished his four seasons as team captain, having played eighty-one games and scored fourteen goals.Professional
During the 2006 collegiate off season, MacKenzie played as an amateur with the
Williamsburg Legacy of thePremier Development League .
