Ray Holman

Ray Anthony Holman is an acclaimed musician, composer, pannist and performer from Trinidad.

Life

Famous for his abilities on the steelpan, Holman has performed throughout the world, introducing steelpan music to new audiences. He is widely regarded as the chief proponent internationally of the steel pan.He pioneered compositions especially for the steel pan in the era when the society's concept for Panorama championship was one where the winner was compelled to play a calypso-local piece of that year. That was 1972. Both he and his orchestra -steel band- Starlift suffered for that revolutionary move of playing your own composition at Panorama. In typical revolutionary, pioneering, entrepreneurial style, he persevered and his resilience was finally rewarded when ace arrangers as Lennox Sharpe, Kenrick Philmore, Robert Greenidge and others followed him and today, musical compositions for the steel orchestra are the norm.

Recently the steelband association and the government of Trinidad and Tobago have finally recognised Ray Holman for his musical genius. Just call him "Mr.Woodbrook".
