Saint Paul, Minnesota , 1955) is an Americanbassist (bothdouble bass andbass guitar ), best known as an accompanist toBob Dylan , with whom he has played since 1989. He is Dylan's longest-running sideman, and has sometimes been characterized as his "musical director" as well.In addition to his work with Dylan, Garnier has recorded with
Tom Waits ,Loudon Wainwright III ,Paul Simon ,Marc Ribot andEric Andersen , and was a member ofAsleep at the Wheel (from 1971-78) andThe Lounge Lizards . He was also a long-time sideman forDavid Johansen in hisBuster Poindexter persona.He appeared in Bob Dylan's 2003 filmMasked and Anonymous .In fact, fellow Minnesotan Garnier's work with Dylan dates back at least to 1975, with the Renaldo and Clara production.
