Jorge Tadeo Lozano

Jorge Tadeo Lozano de Peralta y González Manrique, vizonde de Pastrana or shortened Jorge Tadeo Lozano (born January 30, 1771 in Bogotá - died July 6, 1816 in Bogotá) was a Colombian soldier, doctor, intellectual and statesman. Tadeo Lozano led the Electoral College of Cundinamarca and was President of the United Provinces of New Granada during the Independence of Colombia.

Early years

Tadeo Lozano was born in Santafé de Bogotá on January 30, 1771, son of the Marquises of San Jorge: José Miguel Lozano and María Gonzaléz Manrique. Studied at the Colegio Mayor del Rosario, literature, philosophy and medicine. He later traveled to Spain where he began his military career and was assigned to the Guardia de corps and became a captain. Tadeo Lozano later studied Chemistry between 1792 and 1793 at the "Real Laboratorio de Química de la Corte de Madrid", in Madrid.

After this Tadeo Lozano traveled through Europe returning to the New Granada in 1797 and being appointed Regent and Mayor of the Real Audiencia. He also married María Tadeo Lozano e Isasi.

In 1801 Tadeo Lozano founded along Dr. Luis Azuola y Lozano the magazine "Correo curioso, erudito, económico y mercantil de Santafé de Bogotá". In 1806 joined a Botanical Expedition led by renown scientist José Celestino Mutis, managing topics related to zoology. Tadeo Lozano was also a professor of Chemistry at the Colegio Mayor del Rosario.

Political career

After the events of the Independence revolts in Bogotá against the Spanish monarchy, Tadeo Lozano was appointed to the Presidency of the Constitutional Electoral College which created the Constitution of the State of Cundinamarca between January 25 and March 6, 1811, and was debated and established between March 6 and 30, 1811. This constitution was based on a liberal system and representative democracy.

After these Tadeo Lozano took office as President of the United Provinces of New Granada on April 1, 1811. However, his government only lasted until September 19 of the same year after being removed from power at a town meeting. He then returns to his personal activities; mainly the scientific field, until the city of Bogotá was occupied by the Spanish reconquest effort led by Pablo Morillo.

Death

Morillo incarcerated Tadeo Lozano at the Colegio del Rosario for two months and later executed on July 6, 1816.

Recognitions

In 1954 the Jorge Tadeo Lozano University was founded in his honor.
