Plot

Hanna is now at the hospital in critical condition. Mona sees what has happened and suddenly becomes her friend again. When she wakes up from her coma she has mild amnesia and does not recall anything before the night of the party, thus, forgetting who 'A' is, and what she was going to tell Spencer, Emily, and Aria.

Emily is sent to live with her strict aunt and uncle in Iowa. She doesn't think she can bear it until it is revealed her cousins are not the responsible children their parents think they are. Emily sneaks out with her three cousins to a club and meets a bisexual girl named Trista. Trista soon falls in love with Emily and the two end up dancing. In the morning Emily's aunt and uncle know they have snuck out and her cousins are quick to blame her. She is no longer welcome in the household and they notify her they will be calling her parents. Ashamed, she runs away. At a local diner she sees her parents on the news telling her to come home. She hops a bus to Pennsylvania. Surprisingly, in a short while her entire family has done some thinking and is accepting Emily for who she is. Her family has dinner with Maya and invite her on a vacation, but things are too surreal and Emily is emotionless. Trista has returned (she received a cheap ticket as her father works for the air force) to see Emily and she feels guilty not telling Maya the truth.

No files were charged against Ezra as the school wanted to keep things quiet. He must move away with his cousin, leaving Aria no where to stay. She moves in with Byron and Meredith, whom she is still hostile towards. Meredith lets her take a free 'mindless' art class where Aria runs into Jenna Cavanaugh, but she lies about her identity. Later she finds out Jenna knew the entire time, and before Aria could apologize about blinding her, she explained her and Ali had planned the entire event. She wanted Ali to light the fireworks so Toby would get in trouble and be sent away from her. Aria then remembers she had seen a shadowy figure that night, but Jenna refuses to say who it is. A sends her a message claiming Meredith is a Hooters hostess. She and Mike travel to the restaurant, and when Meredith is not in sight she explains 'A' to Mike. He forces her to tell the police who are on the other side of the restaurant.

Spencer and Mona plan a huge return bash for Hanna to Rosewood Day. They quickly become friends and it is revealed Mona has gotten a few messages from 'A' too. Spencer and Melissa slowly rekindle their relationship and she learns Melissa knew Ali and Ian had a fling. Spencer (with some help from 'A') soon starts suspecting Melissa as Ali's killer rather than herself. Spencer goes to the Golden Orchid interviews and does very well at first but falters on the last few questions. When asked what her biggest accomplishment was she impressed the judges by explaining Ali's death and how she held her composure.

Hanna has now recovered from her injuries. Lucas starts to see her again and is trying to convince her Mona does not have good intentions. Mona explains she and Lucas dated the summer between seventh and eighth grade and he's out to get her. Hanna later tells him off, although feeling guilty after kissing him.

The book concludes at Hannah's party. Maya catches Emily and Trista kissing. Hurt, she runs off. Emily runs off into the pool area where she saw Maya run to. In the hot tub area she sees a blow-up doll face down in the water; she turns it over to see red X's in its eyes. A note across its forehead saying "Tell and Die". Trista hooks up with Noel Kahn essentially forgetting about Emily. The other girls figure out Aria told the police and are going to turn Melissa in for the murder of Ali. Mona reveals to Hanna she had hired Justin Timberlake to come for her party. Emily stays with Hanna as they wait for her favorite superstar as Spencer and Mona head to the police station. After Emily repeated familiar words to Hannah a flashback occurred, and Hanna suddenly remembered that night and everything that had happened. She now remember who 'A' was.

The girls alert the police and tell Spencer. By this time it is too late. Mona has offered Spencer to become 'A' with her and tell her friends they have a misunderstanding. She refuses so Mona starts driving to a gushing stream. She reveals she was the one who saw what they did to Jenna after lifting up her shirt to unveil burn scars. She had found Ali's old diary outside the Dilaurentis' yard. Ali had written all her secrets inside and it was easy to become her. She then reveals it is Ian who killed Ali. Ali told him if he did not break up with Melissa then she would tell everyone they were dating. Spencer then remembers that although she had pushed her, Ali had gotten up just fine. Spencer and Mona start fighting then, after a brief struggle Mona falls off the cliff and wedges her neck in between two rocks. The others arrive and Spencer calls an ambulance.

The police find the journal under Mona's bed. Ian is sentenced to jail while awaiting his trial. Spencer forfeits the Golden Orchid admitting she had cheated. Aria is beginning to comes to terms with Meredith. Meredith reveals to Aria and Byron (Aria's father) that she is pregnant. All the girls meet up after the incident and get drunk. So drunk that they spill all the secrets. Even some very unexpected ones.
