Fordham Observer

Founded in 1981, "The Observer" is the award-winning student newspaper of Fordham University. Based at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center Campus in Manhattan, "The Observer’s" circulation also reaches Fordham’s Rose Hill Campus in the Bronx, making it available to all the students in the University’s undergraduate colleges and graduate schools.

Awards

*Alex Palomino, Ali Watts, Craig Calefate and Charlotte Canner received the Region 1 Mark of Excellence Award for Sports Photography from the Society of Professional Journalists in 2008
*First place at the National College Newspaper’s 2008 Convention in San Francisco, in the category of Four Year Non-Weekly
*Honorable Mention, Four Year-College Non-Weekly, 2007 Associated Collegiate press National College Newspaper Convention
*First Place, Most Outstanding University Newspaper for 2006-2007, American Scholastic Press Association
*First Place, Most Outstanding University Newspaper for 2005-2006, American Scholastic Press Association

It is Lincoln Center’s fourth paper. The first was “The Curved Horn” that was brought over from Rose Hill when the Lincoln Center Campus was built in 1968. Two other papers, “The Review” and “Evex” were started up. By 1981, all three papers had folded and the school was ready for a voice for students and “The Observer” was born. *Lori Majewski- was the executive editor at “UsWeekly” then founding editor of “Teen People” and later, executive editor of “Entertainment Weekly”

*Joe McDonald - managing editor of "New York Sportscene" magazine and assistant editor of "Mets Inside Pitch" magazine

The current sections of "The Observer" include: News, Opinions, Arts & Culture, Features, Literary, and Sports.

NewsFrom the latest happenings at Fordham to current world events, News handles it all. It is the most read section of "The Observer".

OpinionsAs a University located in the heart of New York City, Fordham has a variety of students with different points of view. The Opinions section gives them an outlet to express themselves. Topics include politics, trends, and Fordham fads.

Arts and CultureNew York City is a thriving center of art and culture. Museums, plays, operas, films, music, art shows and concerts all find their way into this section. Newer forms of art such as comic books and video games can also be found here.

FeaturesSoft news stories are found in Features. Features provides a glimpse of news that may not be groundbreaking but is still valuable to the Fordham community. The Urban Cocktail is Features’ relationship section. Features is also home to pieces on technology and some of the best places to visit in the city.

LiteraryThis section functions differently because it showcases the creating writing of the Fordham community. It is built of submissions from current students, members of faculty and staff, as well as graduates of Fordham University.

SportsThough not the home of the official Fordham sports teams, Lincoln Center has its own thriving athletic presence. Sports covers LC clubs and teams, Rose Hill athletics, and national sports happenings.
