Erick Almonte (born February 1, 1978 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) is a Major League Baseball player in the Detroit Tigers organization. He was originally signed by the New York Yankees as an amateur free agent in 1996. He made his Major League debut on September 4, 2001 for the Yankees.

Professional career

Almonte was signed by the New York Yankees as a amateur free agent in 1996. He spent four years in the Minors before getting called up in 2001. He made his debut on September 4, 2001. After speding the 2002 season in the Yankees minor league system, he was called up in 2003 after Derek Jeter suffered an injury, and was the teams starting shortstop until he was healed.

Almonte spent the 2004 season in the Colorado Rockies organization after getting released from the Yankees. In November of 2004 the Cleveland Indians signed him to a minor league contract, but before playing any games for their minor league team they sold him to the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters of Japans Pacific League. In 2006 he played for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlanta League.

On October 31, 2007 he signed a minor league deal with the Detroit Tigers.

Personal

His brother, Hector, played in the Majors in 1999 and 2003 for the Florida Marlins, Boston Red Sox, and Montreal Expos.
