In 2002, the two business consultants Peter L. Pedersen and Knut Einfeldt took part in a business plan contest by the government of the German state of
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern , presented a plan for setting up a private university operated as a business institution, and won the first and third prize. In 2003, the decision was made to establish the private university in
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern , which was then narrowed down to the city of Rostock in 2004. The company set to run the university was formed in September 2004. In spring of 2007, "Educationtrend AG", a holding fromHamburg , bought 97.8% of the shares in the Hanseatic University and, at the same time, increased its share capital. The institution was then granted university status by the state ministry of education in July 2007.The founding president, Wolf Schäfer, was formerly Vice-President of the
Helmut Schmidt University of the German Armed Forces inHamburg . University studies began in the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences on October 22, 2007.Degrees
Bachelor courses run for three years (worth 180
ECTS points) and the master programmes for two years (120 ECTS points). The "PHU" consists of two faculties. Lectures are held in German and English. Preparation for the First State Law Examination incl. Bachelor Course (LL.B. )Beginning in the winter semester 2008, the HU will be offering law studies as only the second private university in Germany. Parallel to the classical preparation for the State Examination, it is set to offer an
LL.B. as well. The studies will be principally aimed at applied law practice, trial management, and international business group management. Our consistent orientation towards the main fields of law is reflected in the high number of internships.Fees and admission
Tuition fees range between 1,000 and 1,250 euros per month, but scholarships are planned in cooperation with companies.
Traditionally, German universities select their students based opon their
Abitur school-leaving exam results. The PU does not follow this, but rather employs a set of different admission criteria, including interviews.Research and Doctorates
As the institution has been granted university status, it may award
doctor al degrees to its students, and conduct its own research.Athletics
Although several yachting and sailing clubs already exist in
Rostock , the "PHU" has initiated the establishment of its own "Hanseatic Yachting Club" for the spring of 2008.Jürgen Knuth , twice world sailing champion, has been appointed General Manager for the yachting club.See also
