Australian Doctors International

AUSTRALIAN DOCTORS INTERNATIONAL (ADI) is a not-for-profit, non-government development aid organisation that is working to raise the standard of health for people in the remote Western Province, Papua New Guinea. ADI has chosen to work here because of the region's poor status of health and high strategic importance to Australia.

ADI's programs include:
i) Deploying volunteer doctors to provide primary health care to remote communities;
ii) Implementing public health programs to eliminate malaria and lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis);
iii) Education and training to increase the capacity of local health workers.

So 2002, ADI have deployed 14 doctors on 22 assignments to look after a patient population of around 32,000 people in the North Fly District, Western Province, PNG. Volunteer doctors have said, "Working for ADI in PNG is about the medicine, the people and the place. It's about pathology you will never see in Australia and it's about life experiences that you will never have at home."

ADI's programs are already well-established in the North Fly District. Here existing health services are deteriorating and difficult to access, or altogether closed down. Additionally, North Fly is home to about 10,000 refugees who are stateless and do not receive any health services.

ADI will start operations in the South Fly District in 2009. The District's close proximity to Australia carries the threat of cross-border incursion of communicable and vaccine-preventable diseases such as tuberculosis and influenza. Currently many PNG nationals are seeking health services in Queensland.

ADI is run by volunteers and relies on private sponsors, funding bodies, philanthropic organisations, corporations and community service groups to fund programs. It does not have any political or religious affiliations.

ADI is a signatory to the Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), approved by AusAID and has charitable tax deductibility status.
