Physiographic province

Physiographic province

A physiographic province is a geographic region with a specific geomorphology and often specific subsurface rock type or structural elements. A continent may be subdivided into various provinces, each having a specific character, relief, and environment which contributes to its uniqueness.

In eastern North America, the Coastal Plain, Piedmont, Blue Ridge, Valley and Ridge, and Appalachian Plateau are specific physiographic provinces. [http://tapestry.usgs.gov/physiogr/physio.html A Tapestry of Time and Terrain, USGS]
