- Juice Wilson
Juice Wilson (January 21, 1904 - ?) was an American
jazz violinist.Wilson grew up an
orphan and was raised by hisuncle from age three inChicago . He began playing drums in the Chicago Militia Boys Band, then switched to violin at age eight. By the age of twelve he was already playing withJimmy Wade , and at 14 he performed withFreddie Keppard . He worked onsteamboat s on theGreat Lakes and did extended residencies withJimmy Harrison inOhio . Early in the 1920s he worked inErie, Pennsylvania withHersal Brassfield , then moved toBuffalo, New York to play withEugene Primus as well as the Buffalo Junior Symphony Orchestra.In 1928, Wilson moved to
New York City and played with Lloyd Scott at theSavoy Ballroom . At the end of the decade he toured Europe withNoble Sissle , and decided to remain there. He worked first inHolland withEd Swayzee ,Leon Abbey , theUtica Jubilee Singers , theLouis Douglass Revue,Little Mike McKendrick 's International Band, andTom Chase . He made trips toSpain andNorth Africa before settling inMalta , where he became a local star. He worked there through much of the 1940s and 1950s as a multi-instrumentalist, and made further tours around theMediterranean before coming back to the United States in the 1960s. His date of death is not known.References
