San Jerónimo (Los Barbosa)

San Jeronimo is a town in the municipality of San Martin Hidalgo in the Mexican State of Jalisco, approximately 1 hour southwest of Guadalajara, and 2 hours east of Puerto Vallarta.

Toponymics

San Jeronimo's real name was Los Barbosa, because of a family who owned most of the town. But it later changed because the towns in the area were being renamed to saint names.

San Jeronimo's population is about 487 as of 2008. The town was founded in the days of Nueva Galicia, (Jalisco). It may be suggested that the town was founded by the Aztec tribes the were in the area.

A French-Mexican family called the Castros migrated to this town because of the family's
patriarch Fabian Castro, who was orphaned when Barranca de Oblatos, his hometown, had been destroyed by a flood,killing his parents, and their God blessed farm. They still live their, and are known for their hardworking and unity

Economy

Most of the economy in this area is corn, tequila or agavesmany people farm on cuamil(es)- which are hillside crops. They alsofarm beans, squash, and chayotes.

Tourism

*Kiosko and Plaza- downtown-community plaza with bandstand and church

*Hacienda San Jose Miravalle- old 1900s hacienda which was famous because of its unique tequila production. It was also the site for many Mexican Civil War battles.Today it is in ruins, it has a church, servants quarters, and a residence mansion.

*La Barranca- which is a red clay dirt canyon is just minutes from San Jeronimo. It also has a lake and a presa, or dam

Hydrography

There are two rivers, one that flows through the center of the town called La Canadaand the other one to the north called El Seboruco.
