The disorder is caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), a fairly common infection that usually causes only small warts to develop. Koswara suffers from the immune deficiency
Epidermodysplasia verruciformis which renders him unable to stop the parasitic wart growth.He became a victim of the disease after he sustained a cut below his knee when he was fifteen causing him to develop warts in that area which over the following decade propagated to the rest of his body. The disease proved to be incapacitating and Koswara ending his career as a fisherman and forcing him to join a freak show to support himself. He is currently being treated by Indonesian doctors alongside American dermatology expert Dr Anthony Gaspari. On August 26, 2008, MSNBC reported that Dede had returned home following surgery to remove thirteen pounds (5.8 kilo) of warts from his body.
