The son ofAndrew Knox ,Bishop of the Isles , he received crown provision to theDeanery of the Isles onAugust 4 1617 .Watt & Murray, "Fasti Ecclesiae", p. 270.] He is the first Dean of the Isles to be known by name, though an unnamed cathedral dean was recorded in 1572, and the "dean and chapter of Iona" are attested again onJune 5 1576 .On
February 24 1619 he was granted crown provision to succeed his father asBishop of the Isles , his father later becomingBishop of Raphoe inIreland .
