- W2W
The W2W is the name of a cross-country
cycle route inNorthern England . It runs fromWalney Island inCumbria to Sunderland on theRiver Wear (hence 'W2W', or Walney to Wear).History
The route was launched on
June 1 2005 to complement the popularSea to Sea Cycle Route (C2C) that runs fromWhitehaven toSunderland . It is designed to be slightly harder and longer than this other route, totalling either 149 or 151mile s. As it has only been launched recently, the route is still undergoing some improvements (June 2005 ) to meetNational Cycle Network standards.Route
From west to east, the W2W passes takes the following route:
* From Walney Island in the
Irish Sea it goes on to the industrial port ofBarrow-in-Furness
* It then runs through theFurness peninsula, passing towns such asUlverston and the picturesqueGrange-Over-Sands . There are safety issues along this stretch of the route as sections of the path follow the busyA590 trunk road
* The route continues to skirt theLake District national park towards the historical market town ofKendal
* After this, the path continues northwards, before moving in an easterly direction towardsKirkby Stephen and through thePennines toBarnard Castle inCounty Durham
* At Barnard Castle, the route splits into two spurs. The northerly spur passes throughHamsterley , taking two miles more to reach the beautiful cathedral city ofDurham than the easier southern spur which passes throughBishop Auckland [ A third option is now available. Regional Route 52 between Barnard Castle and Whitby allows cycling the Walney to Whitby route of 171 miles.]
* The final 18 miles of the W2W follows the River Wear to theNorth Sea at Sunderland.Footnote
