Grant Serpell was a member of several bands during the 1960s and '70s including Affinity and Sailor, and was an encouraging influence over two of the members of The Hoosiers while being their chemistry teacher [ [http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/music/features/why-the-hoosiers-are-getting-seriously-cheery-782250.html Why The Hoosiers are getting seriously cheery - Features, Music - The Independent ] ] at Waingels College.

Grant is currently enjoying a revival of Sailor's success, which started in the early 1990s. He is now touring the UK and Europe with the band [ [http://www.serpell.org/genealogy/grant.php?PHPSESSID=ae73f1f50fc9a6dbc49ce6adaaae5770 Serpell One Name Study: Aboutus ] ] .

Personal life

Grant married Michelle Kingsland on October 1, 1966. In 1967 Michelle gave birth to the couple's first child, Edmund Charles, followed nearly two years later by their second child, Charlotte Anna.

Career

While studying for a degree in Chemistry from the University of Sussex Grant became involved with the musical scene and founded The Jazz Quartet and played with the University of Sussex Jazz Trio (known as The U.S. Jazz Trio).

After graduating Grant joined a band called Ice, and then joined the Jazz-Rock band Affinity, before joining Sailor, the band that has provided him with the most fame.

In 1985, during Sailor's quieter times, Grant became a Chemistry teacher at Waingels Copse Comprehensive School (now Waingels College) where he became head of the department. He was an excellent teacher and well liked for his friendly teaching style, and for several years entertained students by making Christmas trees using a metal stand and various chemical mixtures to form different coloured decorations.

While at Waingels College he taught Irwin Sparkes of The Hoosiers and, after hearing a demo from Irwin and Alphonso Sharland, encouraged them to experience life a little more to help provide inspiration for their songs [http://www.thehoosiers.co.uk/biography.html] .
