Dr. Joseph P Vogel, Ph. D (b.
June 9 ,1963 ) is an associate professor atWashington University . He is currently conducting research on how pathogens are able to survive and replicate inside host cells. He has chosen to focus on one bacterial pathogen,Legionella pneumophila , that is able to grow inside the hostile environment of professional phagocytic cells such as macrophages and fresh water amoebae.Dr. Vogel went to
Minnesota State University, Mankato as an undergrad who was interested in pre-medical sciences. However, his passions took him in a different direction as he worked on environmental studies. Inspired by the potential of basic science, Dr. Vogel went on to pursue a doctorate atPrinceton University . There, he joined the Isberg lab which specialized in Legionella pneumophila and was able to publish a paper in Science (Vogel JP, Andrews HL, Wong SK, Isberg RR. Conjugative transfer by the virulence system of Legionella pneumophila. Science 1998 279:873-876). Impressed by his work, Dr. Vogel was hired as an assistant professor by Washington University before being promoted to associate professor.
