Greville Phillimore

Greville Phillimore

Greville Phillimore (1821-1884), was a priest of the Church of England and hymnal compiler. He was educated at Westminster, the Charterhouse, and Christ Church, Oxford, where he graduated B.A. in 1842. Ordained in 1843, he became Vicar of Downe-Ampney, Cricklade, Gloucestershire, in 1851; Rector of Henley-on-Thames in 1867 and of Ewelme in 1883. He died on January 20, 1884.

Phillimore was joint editor with J. R. Woodford and H. W. Beadon of "The Parish Hymn Book" (1863; enlarged edition of 1875). This was one of the first books to give exposure to John Mason Neale's translations of Greek hymns. He has also published, in 1856, "Parochial Sermons." [Julian, John. "Dictionary of Hymnology", 2nd ed., 1907]
