The Café Leonar is a café, a bar and a bookstore (for fiction, non fiction and judaica) in Hamburg Germany founded by Sonia Simmenauer. It is the first Jewish café in Hamburg since pre-war times, and serves kosher pastries as well as Jewish specialities. It opened it's doors on the 15th of January 2008 in the old Jewish part of Hamburg called the Grindel.

History

Until 1938, Simmenauer's grandfather Leonhart owned a factory in Hamburg, Wandsbeck with his partner Arndt. From the name of these two men came their factory's name Leonar. It was the previous owner of the building, who gave her the broschures from 1927 to 1929 with the words: "Leonar would be a nice name for the café."
