Calais (Reuters Product)

Calais is a Thomson Reuters initiative to encourage the wide deployment of semantic technologies in the information and content marketplaces [ [http://www.opencalais.com Calais Overview] ] . Originally launched in January, 2008 the initiative has garnered wide attention [ [http://www.readwriteweb.com/archives/reuters_calais.php Reuters Wants The World To Be Tagged] ] , [ [http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=11002939 Start making sense] ] due to its technical capabilities and "free to all" business model.

The Calais Web Service ingests unstructured text and returns Resource Description Framework formatted results identifying entities, facts and events within the text [ [http://opencalais.mashery.com/page/documentation Calais API guide] ] . The service appears to be based on technology acquired when Reuters purchased ClearForest in 2007.

Recent uses of the technology have included the automatic tagging of blog articles [ [http://www.dangrossman.info/wp-calais-auto-tagger/ WP Calais Auto Tagger] ] and the organization of museum collections [ [http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/dmsblog/index.php/2008/03/31/opac20-opencalais-meets-our-museum-collection-auto-tagging-and-semantic-parsing-of-collection-data/ OpenCalais meets our museum collection /auto-tagging and semantic parsing of collection data] ] .

Calais uses natural language processing technologies delivered via a web service interface.
