KMXN (92.9 FM) is a radio station broadcasting an album oriented rock format. Licensed to Osage City, Kansas, USA, the station serves the Lawrence area. The station is currently owned by Viking Communications.

History

1981-2003 - KANS - 50s-60s OldiesOriginally the station served Emporia. By 2003, the oldies format was satellite-fed.

2003-2005 - KKYD - Rhythmic CHR "Wild 92.9"This was certainly a change. Topeka had never had an urban-formatted station before. Despite the new owners using the same playlist for several months, the station actually did well in the ratings.

2005-2006 - KMXN - 70s-90s hits "Max FM"Presenting the first Max FM in the area. New owner Jerome Zimmer reportedly didn't want to be involved with an Urban-related format, so around the time KLZR was officially going Hot Adult Contemporary, Zimmer brought a "Jack FM"-style format to this frequency. The station never had jocks. The similarities to Classic Hits KWIC were obvious.

2006-2007 - KMXN - Classic Rock "X 92-9"Another year, and another format change. With "Max" not doing so well, KMXN flipped to classic rock to compete more directly against KDVV and KWIC. KMXN added live air talent, plus the syndicated Bob & Tom show.

2006-2007 - KMXN - Album Rock "X 92-9"In January 2007, "X" transitioned from classic rock to "active" rock.
