History

Bay of Plenty Polytechnic was established in 1982 as the local Community College, providing training mainly in trades, horticulture, agriculture and business. Initially, the college tended to reflect the region, with one third of its student hours devoted to horticultural training.

In 1988, its name changed to Bay of Plenty Polytechnic, and in 1991 an additional campus, the Bongard Centre in the central business district, named after the inaugural Chairman of the Board Bill Bongard, was completed for business, computing and hair dressing programmes. In 2000, Tauranga Moana bestowed the designation of Te Kuratini o Poike to the Polytechnic. Te Aongahoro, the student learning centre was built, containing the Library, the Education Development Centre, the Copy Centre, a cafe and several lecture theatres.

The Polytechnic has since grown to over 12,000 students taking certificate, diploma and degree programmes in a range of areas, from animal care, sports and beauty therapy to business, computing and graphic design.
