An EMD F45 is a C-C cowleddiesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between1968 and1971 . Power was provided by anEMD 645E3 20-cylinder engine which generated 3600horsepower (2.7 MW).86 examples of this locomotive model were built for three American railroads. The three railroads were the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe with 40 units, the Great Northern with 14 units and Burlington Northern with 32 units. The Great Northern units were inherited by Burlington Northern. The last 20 Santa Fe units were equipped with steam lines so that they could be used as booster units on passenger trains. Two of the former Great Northern units were sold by BN to the
Montana RailLink which operates at least one of them, number 645, to this day.References
