Stephen Evans (diplomat)

Stephen Evans CMG OBE (born 1950) has been appointed as the next British High Commissioner to Bangladesh, a post he will take up in June 2008 in succession to Anwar Choudhury.

Evans is a former soldier and an expert in the political and social situation in Afghanistan. [The Guardian - "Spotlight falls on Afghan expert" - http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2001/nov/20/september11.afghanistan] He joined the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in 1974, serving in London as a Third Secretary until 1975. He was then promoted to Second Secretary, a post he held between 1976 and 1978.

Between 1978 and 1980, Evans was Head of Chancery and Consul in Hanoi, Vietnam; returning to the FCO in London in 1980 as First Secretary. He held this post until 1982.

In 1983, he moved to Bangkok, Thailand as First Secretary; returning to London in 1986 to resume his post as First Secretary at the FCO. Between 1990 and 1993, Evans was First Secretary with specific political responsibilities in Ankara, Turkey.

Between 1993 and 1996, he was Counsellor in the Economic, Commercial and Aid Department in Islamabad, Pakistan, going on secondment with the UN Special Mission to Afghanistan between 1996 and 1997.

Evans returned to London in 1997 as Head of the OSCE/Council of Europe Department at the FCO. In 1998, he moved within the FCO to become Head of the South Asia Department, before being appointed Chargé d'Affaires in Kabul, Afghanistan in 2001. He moved to become British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and the Maldives in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 2002.

Between 2006 and 2007, Evans was the British Ambassador to Afghanistan in Kabul; returning to the FCO in 2007 as Director of Afghanistan Information Strategy.
