Alfrēds Rubiks

Alfrēds Rubiks (born September 24, 1935 in Daugavpils) is a Latvian politician. He served as Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Riga City Soviet from 1984 to 1990, and is commonly referred to as the last Communist Mayor of Riga. As head of the Communist Party of Latvia in 1991 he opposed Latvia's independence from the Soviet Union, and was imprisoned for attempting to overthrow the government.
