Sisk

Sisk is an Irish surname and has been found in East Cork since the 18th century. A modern version of the medieval surname Saghas of County Kildare.

Early Origins

The earliest form of Sisk is found in Tenby, Wales in 1405. Sayse, from Sais, is a sobriquet given to many Anglicized Celtic Welshmen which means "English speaking." This name came down from the preceding centuries of Saxon-Welsh interaction and intermarriage.

By the early Medieval Period some Welshmen bearing this surname immigrated to County Kildare where they were huntsmen and falconers for the Earls of Kildare. Sayse became Saghas or Seix. Over the centuries descendents of these men moved throughout Ireland. In East Cork Seix became Sisk. [ "The Surnames of Ireland" Edward MacLysaght]
