Kaliokalani

Kaliokalani

James Kaliokalani (1835–1852) was a Hawaiian royal chief, member of the House of Kalakaua and brother of Kalakaua and Liliokinauokalani.

Kaliokalani was born May 29, 1835. ["A History of the Sandwich Islands" by Sheldon Dibble, page 272.] He was son of the High Chief Caesar Kapa'akea and the High Chiefess Analea Keohokalole who were advisors to the reigning king. He was the second born and eldest surviving son and had more than nine sibling. He was a younger brother of Moses Kapaakea and older brother of David Kalākaua, Lili'uokalani, Anna Kaiulani, Kaiminaauao, Miriam Likelike, and William Pitt Leleiohoku II.

He was (hanai) adopted to his maternal grandfather High Chief Aikanaka. ["The Hawaiian Chiefs' Children's School" by Amos Starr Cooke, Juliette Montague Cooke, Mary Atherton Richards, page 62.] He attended Royal School, a school founded in 1839 to westernize the children of the Hawaiian Royal Family. It was run by Amos Starr Cooke and Juliette Montague Cooke who were American missionaries who taught the children that the way of their ancesters were sinful and evil. His sister Lydia Kamakaeha and his brother David Kalākaua also attended the school. He was declared eligible to succeed the throne with the approval of the Privy Council by the royal orders of King Kamehameha III. He was once found in room of Emma Rooke and severely punished by Mr. Cooke. Emma was not punished because her schoolmate Elizabeth Kekaaniau may have been with Emma and others at the time. Emma was nine years old at the time and would one day married Kamehameha IV.

Kaliokalani died April 2, 1852, aged 16 in an epidemic. ["All about Hawaii". The University of Michigan, page 19.] He was laid to rest at the Royal Mausoleum of Hawaii. [http://www.4dw.net/royalark/Hawaii/kauai.htm]
