Boyd Crumrine Patterson was the 9th president of Washington & Jefferson College. [ [http://washjeff.cdmhost.com/cdm4/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/p4019coll8&CISOPTR=26 U. Grant Miller Library Digital Archives : Item Viewer ] ] He was born in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, April 23, 1902 and graduated from Washington and Jefferson College in 1923, completing his studies in three years. Patterson was a member of the well-known Crumrine family of Washington County and a third generation Washington and Jefferson graduate. His father John P. Patterson, had attended Washington and Jefferson, Class of 1885, and his grandfather, Boyd Crumrine, a noted local historian, was in the Class of 1860 (Jefferson College). After graduation Patterson attended Johns Hopkins University receiving a Master's and Doctor's degree in mathematics. He returned to Washington and Jefferson College as faculty from 1926 to 1927 before becoming Associate Professor of Mathematics at Hamilton College, in Clinton, New York. In 1943 Patterson became the head of the mathematics department at Hamilton, and retained that position until 1950 when he returned to Washington and Jefferson College to serve as president.

During his presidency Patterson oversaw curriculum revisions, updating admissions standards and generally to enhance Washington and Jefferson's reputation. The fifties and sixties also saw major renovations and building on the campus. The most momentous innovation of Dr. Patterson's term occurred when the possibility of coeducation at Washington and Jefferson was introduced. On December 12, 1969, the Board of Trustees voted to authorize admission of women as undergraduate students, effective in September 1970. Dr. Patterson retired June 30, 1970, after 20 years as president of Washington and Jefferson College. During his career he was an active member of Phi Beta Kappa, Society of Sigma Xi, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Mathematics Society and the Mathematical Association of America, and also a member of Phi Kappa Psi.
